Save Our Last Bank

PETITION - Summary

As soon as HSBC announced the closure, local residents called for them to talk with the local community. They claim to be a bank for local people and uphold community values. The petition asked them to consult with the people of Whitchurch, and they were invited to a Public Meeting, but they decided not to attend.

HSBC closed the Whitchurch branch on 22 January 2010, citing a lack of commercial justification. This will have a major effect on individuals, businesses and community groups who used the bank and ATM, requiring people to drive for miles to the nearest alternative.

The petition read:
"We, the undersigned, call on HSBC to consult with the Whitchurch community and relevant local bodies regarding the planned closure of the Whitchurch branch - the last bank in town."

Over 1700 signed the petition both online and by hard copy. HSBC decided it would not meet with local people.
